21 Healthy Eating Tips and Tricks you Need to Know

Often times losing weight, getting in shape, eating healthy, etc. can be a challenge. Throughout my years of fitness and weight loss I have tried and learned many tips and tricks that have certainly helped me along the way.  I have compiled 21 of my favorite in which I am confident will aid you if you trying to lose weight, get in shape and/or finding in hard to eat healthy.

1.  Always add Water
Always have a glass of water if you arent drinking just water.
Drink the water when you are actually thirsty.  Drink the other beverage only when you want something other than water, a different taste, etc.  You are actually quenching your thirst with the water and are less likely to drink too much of the other beverage.

2. Got a sweet tooth?
Drink a glass of water, brush your teeth or pop in a Listerine strip. Bye-Bye sweet tooth.

3. Eat the healthy foods off of your plate first,
You will get full faster and less likely to overeat the less healthy foods.

4.  Make your own flavored water.
Fill a container ¾ way with ice and water. Add freshly cut fruit, vegetables, herbs in any desired combinations.  Also experiment with combinations such as cucumber and mint, strawberry and basil, cantaloupe and lime, or blueberry and lavender. Place in the fridge and let the water infuse for at least 2 up to 12 hours.

5. Eat more of the Good Fats
Avocados, Nuts, Eggs, Olive Oil, Fatty Fish

6. Most Satisfying Foods
Popcorn, Oatmeal, Beans, Fruit, Baked Potato.
These foods will provide more satisfaction when you are hungry and keep you feeling full longer.

7. Bright Colors
Hot colors including red, orange and yellow stimulate your mood and appetite.  i.e. McDonalds yellow arches.  Make sure that the dishes you use are white, pastel or soft toned colors as well as your dining area.

8.  Serving Sizes are all in the Hand  Check this out

9.  Do Ice Cream Differently
Peel and freeze bananas, put them in a food processor, put fruit or whatever else you would like in and blend.  Viola, you have guilt free, homemade ice cream.  Frozen bananas have the same consistency as ice cream and taste amazing. Add protein powder for an extra boost of protein that you won't even taste.

10. Replace Croutons with Almonds
Almonds have 2x the protein, 3x the fiber and ⅓ of the carbs of croutons

11. Keep a Food Journal
As much as you dont want to or think you dont have time to.  Keeping a journal at least on a temporary basis, is definitely a part of weight loss and healthy eating success. You are more mindful of your food choices, you learn what you can/cannot eat, portion sizes, etc. You really think about what you are putting in your mouth when you keep track of it.

12. Curve your appetite in between meals
By chewing gum or eat a peppermint

13. If you find yourself eating too fast
Switch and use your non-dominant hand, this will slow down your eating pace and help you feel full before you eat too much.

14. Make Black Bean Brownies
This may not sound great but they are good! Substituting black bean puree for flour in brownies will help balance blood sugar spikes as well as add protein and fiber to your treats. And it won't change the flavor, so no one has to know about your secret ingredient. This will also make for a gluten-free dessert option.

15. Make your own Popcorn
You can actually make your own homemade microwave popcorn in minutes without the hassle of an air-popping machine or the mess of the stovetop method. Pour a quarter cup of kernels into a microwave-safe bowl, cover with a microwave-safe plate, and zap for 2:45. If there are still unpopped kernels, just run them through again.  Feel free to add healthy options such as cinnamon, honey, dark chocolate chips, nuts, etc.

16. Eat before you Eat
If you know you’re going to a party, a buffet, or a big dinner and don’t want to totally bust your diet, eat one to two cups of raw veggies before hand to give your stomach a bit of a head start so that you dont overindulge.

17.  Dont Eat From the Box
Dont eat snacks straight from the box, instead get some snack-sized ziploc bags, divide them and place them where you normally put the box.  These also make great on the go snacks to carry with you.

18.  Cheat
Allow yourself a meal once a week.  It gives you something to look forward to, keeps you from going crazy when dieting, it will not sabotage your diet and the bump in calories will help keep your metabolism up.

19.  Make healthy substitutes with Yogurt

20.  Skinny Baking
Replace half of the oil or fat(Crisco or Butter) in your baking recipes with applesauce. It will make it more moist and less calories.

21.  Always have a Healthy Snack on Fleek!
This is my favorite and ultimate #1 when it comes to eating healthy.  You cannot predict what is going to happen when you leave your house.  In the event that you need a snack, your blood sugar gets low, you skipped breakfast, whatever be prepared with snacks.  Check out my 10 Healthy Snacks to Throw in your Bag post for some ideas.

11 Items a Woman Doesnt need in her Purse

Its pretty much unavoidable, as women we need to carry a purse or at least some type of bag with us everywhere we go.  As I know most women can relate, we constantly have needs which can most often be fulfilled by digging in our purse or some type of bag.

In my opinion, it isnt necessary to carry a huge purse or have unnecessary items taking up room and increasing the weight of your purse (they are heavy enough!). Have a neat organized bag in which you easily reach in and get what you need instead of wondering what you do or do not have.

Following is my list of the most common items I have seen in womens’ purses that are so surprising and unnecessary leading to clutter/disorganization which results in stress and frustration.

Full sized  (deodorant, lotion, vaseline, combs, brushes, etc)
Fulled sized hygiene products?! Yes, I have seen this quite often. If this isnt adding unnecessary weight….Opt for travel/purse sized instead they fit better and weigh a lot less

Batteries
Yes another shocker.  If you need batteries go to the nearest dollar store and pick up a pack.

Phone Charger(keep one in your car, office, whereever you are most of the day)
With the increased use of cell phones, this is one that I have seen a lot.  If leaving home without your charger is not an option for you… try charging your phone at the same time everyday alotting the time needed for it to fully charge, I put my phone on the charger as soon as I get up and the morning and it charges while I am getting dressed.  Purchase a car charger and/or charger for work.  You can find super cheap new chargers for any phone on Ebay or Amazon.

Clothing
Try to avoid putting articles of clothing in your purse, they are bulky and just isnt a good look.  Opt for a separate bag if you need to bring clothing with you.

Receipts
Put receipts in your purse only as a temporary measure for transport.  Dont let them become a permanent fixture in the bottom or your purse.  See my “Four Mistakes you are Making with Receipts” post for great tips on what to do with your receipts.

Junk food
Its too convenient to eat unhealthy when all you have to do is reach into your bag and get a candy bar, bag of chips, etc.  Opt for “Healthy Snacks that you Can Throw in your Bag” Yep, I have a post for that too! (its been my most viewed thus far)

Shoes
Im gonna shake my head on this one too, the only exception, if you need them are the little “fold-a-flats” that fold nicely into a cute little bag.

Nail polish
Now this is a disaster waiting to happen.  Try to set aside some time to polish your nails while you are at home.

Books/Magazines
Way too heavy and most of the time they dont fit.  Opt for a smaller bag in which you will probably have a few other items to add.

Visible Money/Coins
This screams “take me” and I see it time and time again.  Keep your money and coins in a wallet in your purse. When your coins starts to add up, empty them into a separate coin bank.

Excessive Trash
Candy wrappers, water bottle, papers, old receipts, etc that need to be thrown away.  Try cleaning out your purse regularly once a week or as often as needed.  It cuts down on clutter and unnecessary weight as well.

The Takeaway- Do a purse/handbag clean out, if you have any the above items in your bag try the options.  You want a nice clean, organized bag where you can easily find and get what you need. See my “Organization on the Go” post for items you want to keep in your purse/bag/car.

Thrift Store Scores

So you are probably thinking, thriftlifting what in the world?  Ok so after some brainstorming wondering what I was going to title this post, I literally made up the word thriftlifting. Thriftlifting is when you purchase goods from thrift stores or on sale at such good deals, you feel like you stole them.  Funny right? I thriftlift all of time, so I consider myself to be “thriftlifter”.

So I will admit, I am a thrift store junkie and frequent thriftlifter.  I love shopping at thrift stores because you can find some really good stuff at blow your mind prices.  One of the other great things about shopping thrifty that I just recently realized is that you not only find great things for yourself but family and friends as well especially if you know their sizes, likes, dislikes, etc.

My favorite thrift stores at the moment are: The Salvation Army Thrift Stores and The Goodwill Clearance Centers.

Out of all of the times that I have shopped at The Salvation Army Thrift Stores, I have never been disappointed.  The stores are always clean, organized, the cashiers are warm and welcome and the prices will blow your mind.  On my last trip I discovered two large $0.88 racks, yes everything on the racks, $0.88, I was blown away.

Not too far from me is a Goodwill Clearance Center.  Now everything is separated clothing from homegoods and such but unlike your typical store, everything is in these flat bins that you sort through and shop.  You get a rolling bin to put the items that you are going to purchase in, you take your items to the register and place your bin on a scale to be weighed and you pay for your items by the pound! How cool is that?  At my local Goodwill Clearance Center everything is $1.29 per pound.  On Sundays, everything is $0.65 per pound!

My latest Salvation Army and Goodwill hauls…….

Salvation Army- Item Total-3  Total Spent- $5.64
2 Silk Blouses- They are 100% silk  1 American Eagle Denim Jacket
*Items only, accessories not included

Goodwill Clearance Center- Item Total- 12  Total Spent- $6.50
7 pairs of Jeans  2 Pair of Shoes 1 Sweater 1 Swimsuit 1 Drink Coozie

The Takeaway:  Search your area thrift stores here http://www.thethriftshopper.com  if you are a little uncomfortable with thrift shopping, come out of your comfort zone every now and then.  I live in little ‘ol Greenville, SC so my selection is somewhat limited but if you live in a bigger city you can find some really good stuff.  For your next shopping trip try going to a thrift store FIRST.

Happy Shopping!
